How can you achieve success if you don’t know what it looks like?

Written By Maggie Hill

It is a question I have often pondered. Even if you enjoy your career in communications and have aspirations to do big things, figuring out what that looks like can be tricky.

Sometimes it seems that there’s no logical next step and you don’t want to stay in your current role forever. Here are some steps you might like to take to help you on the path that’s right for you.

Finding Your North Star - The first thing you need is a destination. Ask yourself: What do I admire in the roles above me? Is it the strategic influence? The ability to mentor others? Maybe it’s being the go-to person for crisis communications.

Whatever it is, jot it down. Then consider what skills are important in these roles. Are they skills you enjoy using or want to develop more? If the answer is yes, you might be starting to realise where you want to head.

Making a map - Break down your long-term goal into smaller, actionable steps. Want to be a communications director?

List the skills you’ve identified and brainstorm ways you can develop and demonstrate these skills.

Each step builds on the last, giving you the experience and confidence to tackle the bigger challenges.

Allies and Mentors – I personally find it hard to talk about the big goals I have for myself, it can feel quite vulnerable.

I have learnt that when I share my aspirations, I find people who are keen to support and help.

There’s a strong chance that there are the seasoned pros in your network who can offer guidance, share insights, and give you the nudge when you’re stuck.

Don’t hesitate to reach out to those whose careers you admire. Most people love to share their wisdom and are flattered when someone seeks their advice.
